The photos were taken in October 2021 amongst the draining ditches that run the length of the Lea Navigation & the Walthamstow Marshes.
I fell in love with the sensuality of the tangled & decaying Bullrush stems and leaves, slowly falling into the green pools of algae blooms. These photographs capture a sense of an ‘end of season’ last gasp of nature’s fecundity, each plant and flower returning it’s life essence to the water, and come the spring, to replenish and rebirth the next season’s growth.
During the process of taking and editing the photographs, I saw a mysterious repetition of organic heart shapes created by the pools of algae, almost like there was a direct conversation between the plant life and the water. As if this symbiotic relationship was the Marsh Heart.
